A patinated bronze incense burner from the Qianlong period (1735-1796),
18th century. It
features a gold-splash technique.
It bears a hallmark on the base and
is decorated with two mythological lion heads.
While bronze gilding in China dates back to the Han dynasty, the gold splash technique appeared in this form during the Song dynasty.
This method was reserved for the most prestigious bronzes and continued into the 19th century.
