Bronze offering steamer, Han Dynasty, 206 BC-220 AD.
The steamer is composed of three parts: a bowl, a semi-covered cup, and an inverted bowl pierced with lattice-like holes.
This steamer was used to cook food intended for offerings during ceremonies.
This type of liturgical object was among the first bronze ritual utensils to be used in China.
Before the Han Dynasty, bronzes were extremely rare and precious, sometimes used for votive purposes.
Under the Han Dynasty, bronzes were produced in greater quantities for the high aristocracy by perfecting casting methods.
Thus, some bronzes, like this one, could be produced for use in religious rites.
The object is very finely sculpted, with remarkable finishing.
The bronze is only slightly oxidized and displays a beautiful green and brown patina.
