The Ax Handle Stool is one of Bradford Woodworking’s signature pieces.
New life and purpose is given to the ax handles that Brad had seen during his childhood on the farm. Each one is made fully by hand at our farm workshop in Worcester, PA.
The stools pair a scooped cherry hardwood seat with four lathe-turned ax handle legs, each one mortised and wedge-tenoned for joints that withstand age. Your feet can find a comfortable home on the solid steel footrest, fitted individually to each stool. The components have been chosen equally for their beauty, comfort, and longevity.
____
BW's signature ax handle legs are turned on a century-old replicating lathe.
Our Ax Handle Lathe was made by the Klutz Machine Co. of Cincinnati, OH in approximately 1920. It is designed to make copies of complex shapes such as ax handles and gun stocks. Brad bought it from Coopersburg Handle Works when they went out of business in 1987. These machines are now considered obsolete in the industry as more computer based machines do this work. But as an artist, Brad has been able to push this machine in creative ways. It creates a unique surface texture, which would have been sanded down on the products of their original use, but he has utilized it to become BW's signature "look".
