Developed as an innovative alternative to the conventional keyboard typewriter, it employs an ingenious index-printing mechanism in which each character is selected from a circular index before being impressed onto the paper.
Manufactured in Germany during the 1920s, this example is fitted with an original Cyrillic index plate, a configuration encountered far less frequently than the standard Latin version. The machine also bears the D.R.G.M. mark (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster), identifying a registered German industrial design.
Beyond its technical significance, the Mignon is admired for its striking architectural form. The combination of black enamelled metal, exposed mechanical components and precision-engineered controls reflects the functional elegance that defined German industrial design between the World Wars.
