Architectural restraint, carefully balanced proportions and meticulous craftsmanship define this elegant Italian chest of drawers, produced during the 1950s and unmistakably inspired by the design language of Osvaldo Borsani. Every element has been thoughtfully resolved, resulting in a piece whose understated sophistication remains as relevant today as it was more than half a century ago.
The cabinet is crafted in finely figured teak veneer, selected for its warm honey-brown tones and expressive grain. The veneer flows seamlessly across the six drawer fronts, creating visual continuity that immediately reveals the quality of its construction. Softly rounded edges and gently curved drawer fronts further enhance the cabinet's sculptural character, demonstrating the level of craftsmanship associated with the finest Italian workshops of the period.
One of the most distinctive features is the recessed marble top, set within a raised wooden frame that elegantly contains the stone while emphasizing the cabinet's clean architectural profile. The marble, with its delicate cream and beige tones enriched by subtle natural veining, introduces a refined contrast to the warmth of the teak and gives the piece a quiet sense of luxury.
The façade is composed of six generously proportioned drawers arranged in three perfectly balanced columns. Rather than relying on applied hardware, each drawer incorporates an elongated recessed oval detail fitted with a polished brass pull. This discreet solution preserves the purity of the design while allowing the beauty of the materials and the precision of the joinery to take center stage.
The cabinet stands on slender tapered legs finished with solid brass sabots, giving the substantial body an unexpectedly light appearance. The brass detailing is intentionally restrained, providing just enough contrast to enrich the composition without distracting from its elegant simplicity.
Opening the drawers reveals the same level of attention devoted to the exterior. Traditional hand-cut dovetail joints, carefully finished interiors and precise cabinetmaking reflect the standards of high-quality Italian furniture production during the post-war years. Every visible and hidden detail speaks of a piece built to last rather than simply to furnish.
Recently restored with great respect for its original materials and construction, the chest of drawers presents in very good condition, preserving the natural character of both the teak and the marble while being ready for everyday use.
