The oil on board composition captures a tranquil, rustic vignette featuring historic barns and outbuildings, barren winter trees, a stone footbridge, and small silhouetted figures walking through the landscape. The reverse side preserves a highly desirable, authentic paper label from W. H. Baumgras & Co. out of Syracuse, NY, advertising their proprietary "Paragon Academy Board" line. Based on the store's historic 107 E. Railroad Street address, this board definitively dates the piece to the late 1880s or 1890s. The backing board features an unidentified vintage pencil inscription written vertically along the label's edge. Housed in its majestic, deeply carved antique gold gesso frame with intricate floral scrollwork, this turn-of-the-century piece brings immediate old-world gravity, history, and narrative to any space. The original oil on academy board is flat, structurally stable, and securely seated within its frame. The painted surface displays a beautiful, authentic aged patina with vibrant coloration and zero active flaking or paint loss. On the reverse, the historic paper manufacturer label is well-preserved and legible. The heavy, ornate gold gesso frame retains rich, bright gilding throughout its deeply molded floral scroll patterns. True to its century-old age, the frame exhibits honest wear, including natural hairline stabilization cracking (craquelure) in the plaster layer, light perimeter scuffing, and small areas of missing gold gilt along the outer right-edge corners and inner liners. These minor cosmetic imperfections do not threaten structural integrity and beautifully anchor the true antique pedigree of the piece. less
