A set of six Model 31 dining chairs designed by Kai Kristiansen for Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik in Denmark. The design is one of Kristiansen’s most recognizable, with curved upholstered backs held between tall, tapered supports that give each chair a light, open profile.
The teak frames have long, sculpted lines and carefully shaped transitions throughout. Viewed from the side, the angled back supports create a strong architectural silhouette, while the rounded front legs and gently curved backrests soften the overall form. Black upholstery brings out the warmth of the wood and keeps the set feeling graphic without overwhelming the design.
What makes the Model 31 especially good is the balance between presence and restraint. The chairs feel substantial around a dining table, but the open backs and narrow frames keep the set visually light. From every angle there is something intentional to notice, from the way the backrests sit between the uprights to the slight taper of the legs.
A complete set of six is increasingly difficult to find, particularly with such consistent color and presentation across the group. These would work especially well around a teak, rosewood, walnut, or stone dining table, where the dark upholstery and warm wood can hold their own without competing with the rest of the room.
While these chairs are unmarked, they have been attributed to the listed designer based on construction details, materials, proportions, and comparisons with documented examples from reputable design references and period sources. As with many vintage Danish pieces, original labels are not always present.
