The houses here are not, in fact, "little." They are all grande dames of their respective neighborhoods as seen through the artist's post impressionistic lens. Some are well over 100 years old; all are cherished and lovingly restored. Interestingly, each sports a bright red door. which caught the eye of the artist.

George loved painting them all.

"Just One Mile Away" boasts one of the most beautiful gardens in the neighborhood--both front yard and back. In mid-summer, the house is consumed by dense foliage and flower laden bushes--so much so that the view of the house is almost obliterated by old trees whose leaves shade the home from summer sun. George, whose fascination with nature's artistry know no bounds (check out the Botanic Garden series) indulges himself in the application of color.

Here, as in all paintings in this series, George employs a "Sargent-esque" palette of strong reds and opaque black and white contrasts--tempered by the greens and pastels of the foliage. Very much in the post-impressionist tradition, the drawing is very stylized but captures the beauty and charm of this old home.

Thick, thick paint. Visible brush strokes. Multi-textured. It is "Very George."
