Overview
Up for sale is a striking, highly detailed mid-century modern mixed-media relief artwork depicting a traditional Southeast Asian celestial figure or dancer carrying laden baskets under a blossoming lotus branch. This captivating piece beautifully blends fine hand-detailing, rich cultural iconography, and a prestigious framing history, making it a stellar addition to any global bohemian, Hollywood Regency, or Mid-Century Modern (MCM) art collection.
Prestigious Gallery Provenance
The back of this piece retains its original, authentic vintage Gallery Chemould paper showroom label (Stock No. 5032) listing their historic addresses at 271 Princess St., Bombay-2 and 12-F Park St., Calcutta-16. Founded in the 1940s by Khorshed and Kekoo Gandhy, Gallery Chemould is one of India's most celebrated contemporary art institutions, famous for framing and championing the works of India’s modern masters. The typography and layout date this specific gallery-grade frame precisely to the late 1950s or 1960s, offering incredible historical provenance.
Artistry & Craftsmanship
This is a highly textured, dimensional bas-relief work:
Dimensional Relief:
The golden lotus blossoms, structural tree branches, and clothing details are physically raised (impasto/collage style) off the dark fabric backing.
Hand-Painted Details: Features delicate, hand-applied gold, bronze, and silver metallic gouache overlays that catch the light beautifully.
Fine Shading: The figure's face, torso, and limbs showcase exceptionally fine charcoal shading over a tight, premium fabric weave.
Artist: During the late 1950s and 1960s, Bangkok experienced a massive revival in traditional textile and decorative arts, largely fueled by the post-WWII influx of Western tourists, international diplomats and expatriates. The production of specialized mixed-media pieces like this was structured around an organized cottage industry system rather than the Western concept of an individual fine art studio partner. Understanding the specific dynamics of how this piece was manufactured in Bangkok during this time clarifies why it cannot be attributed to a single individual. Rather than one artist executing a piece from start to finish, these artworks were produced in family-run workshops or collective artisan guilds. Also, in mid-century Thai artistic traditions, replicating sacred or royal themes—such as classical celestial deities, dancers, or epic temple reliefs—was seen as a communal act of cultural preservation. Crafting these pieces was viewed as a collaborative trade rather than an avenue for personal expression, meaning individual signatures were explicitly omitted.

The artwork colors remain incredibly crisp and the metallic accents are vibrant. The underlying fabric backing is structurally sound with no dry rot or tearing. Consistent with organic textiles of this age, there are minor, superficial age spots/toning marks on the lower right quadrant of the fabric background. The vintage wooden shadowbox frame displays minor, light superficial scuffs on the outer edges which lends beautiful authentic character to the piece. Glass face is clean and intact. Original gallery hanging wire is firmly attached. less
