Modernism, Mid-Century Modern, Minimalist, Italian Avant-Garde, Post-War British Art
THE STORY & DESCRIPTION
An incredibly chic, sophisticated mid-century modernist artwork that beautifully bridges classic Italian avant-garde composition with post-war British printmaking.
This piece features a striking minimalist, single-line contour portrait titled "Il Frate" (The Friar), executed as an elegant homage print after Amedeo Modigliani’s original 1914 masterpiece drawing.
The artwork is hand-signed in pencil along the lower margin by celebrated contemporary British artist and master printmaker Bernard Cohen (b. 1933), the esteemed former director of the Slade School of Fine Art.
️ LUXURY MADISON AVENUE PROVENANCE & FRAMING
Presented in an exquisite custom giltwood and distressed red-ochre frame, the piece is elevated by a premium, clean linen-wrapped mat liner. The reverse of the backing board preserves two highly collectible historic gallery labels confirming an elite 20th-century Manhattan art world pedigree:
1. Gallery Label: Edward Garratt Antiques – The luxury mid-century dealer with legacy showrooms spanning New York, Palm Beach, and London.
2. Framing Label: A.P.F., Inc. Framemakers & Conservators (1001 Madison Avenue, NYC) – Manhattan's legendary custom framers trusted by elite private collections, blue-chip galleries, and major museums.
This highly decorative, collector-grade piece offers an instant graphic point of interest and tailored elegance for a modern gallery wall, an executive office, or an upscale mid-century entryway.

It is being sold in its original, found gallery presentation and exhibits a beautiful, authentic patina that reflects its age and lineage. * The custom gilt wood frame shows light, normal aged wear, including minor scuffs, light surface abrasions, and superficial flea bites to the outer edges appropriate for its vintage era. * The linen matting remains clean and tightly fitted. * The paper artwork is structurally flat and intact with no tears, though it features subtle, uniform natural fading over time, giving the toned paper a soft, warm vintage character. The backing paper is intact with its original Manhattan provenance labels preserved. Heavy-duty hanging wire is pre-installed on the reverse. That said, this remains a truly remarkable piece of artwork and will bring joy to all who view it. Cohen's legacy lives on with this remarkable piece. Ready to hang out of the box. less
