A handsome set of three framed woodcuts from the celebrated series the triumphs of maximilian, designed by hans burgkmair the elder and issued as a 19th-century edition after the original early 16th-century prints. Presented in matching period walnut veneered frames, the collection offers an evocative glimpse into one of the most ambitious printmaking projects of the renaissance.
hans burgkmair the elder (1473–1531), born in augsburg, was one of germany's foremost renaissance artists, renowned as a painter, engraver, and book illustrator. Commissioned by emperor maximilian i, the triumphs of maximilian was conceived as a monumental visual celebration of the habsburg ruler's military achievements, courtly life, and imperial authority. The extensive cycle remains one of the defining graphic works of the period.
these impressions are later 19th-century printings rather than the original 16th-century editions, and are housed in contemporary walnut veneered frames with gilt slips. Rich in intricate architectural and figurative detail, the prints retain the strength and decorative appeal of burgkmair's celebrated compositions while offering an accessible example of renaissance printmaking.
