The design translates the visual language of luxury leather goods into furniture. Deep black leather is combined with warm burl wood, slim brass-toned accents, embossed basket-weave panels and a decorative leather strap with buckle at the centre of the base. These details refer to traditional saddlery, travel trunks and finely crafted Italian leather goods.

The sculptural side panels follow a sweeping curved line, framing the generously padded leather cushions. The sides and rear are fully finished, allowing the sofa to stand freely within a room.

An oval heraldic badge applied to the side bears the name Paolo Gucci and his personal crest. Paolo Gucci, grandson of Guccio Gucci, developed furniture and lifestyle designs under his own name and was involved in Formitalia's early luxury collections.

The sofa is part of the exuberant Italian luxury aesthetic of the early 1990s. Its combination of black leather, burl wood, brass details and equestrian references gives it a strong postmodern character, with elements of Art Deco Revival and executive design.
