Exceptional 1960s Mexican Modernist barware set comprising a large water or beverage pitcher and four matching tumblers, handcrafted in Mexico from alpaca silver with extensive natural abalone shell inlay.
The set is a striking example of Mid-Century Mexican decorative arts, combining the warm silvery tone of alpaca with individually fitted pieces of iridescent abalone. The mosaic-like surfaces display beautiful variations of pearl, lavender, turquoise, blue, green and pink, changing dramatically as they catch the light.
The pitcher features an elegant tapered silhouette, pointed pouring lip and architectural handle, which is also decorated with abalone shell. The four tall coordinating tumblers repeat the same mosaic pattern, separated by narrow alpaca bands.
For interior designers and collectors, this set has tremendous decorative presence and would make a sophisticated addition to a custom bar, cocktail room, dining room, library, credenza, drinks cabinet or styled shelving installation. It works particularly well within Mid-Century Modern, Mexican Modernist, Hollywood Regency, Organic Modern, Southwestern and contemporary interiors.
The combination of abalone and alpaca silver is closely associated with 20th-century Mexican metalwork, when workshops combined traditional silversmithing techniques with native materials and increasingly modern forms. This set pairs beautifully with Mexican decorative arts by makers and designers such as Los Castillo, William Spratling, Hector Aguilar, Emilia Castillo and Alfredo Villasana.
All pieces are marked “MEXICO” and “ALPACA” / “ALPACA MEXICO.” No specific maker is attributed, so the set is presented as a fine example of Mexican Mid-Century Modern abalone and alpaca metalwork.
