The style recalls the modern sculpture of the early 20th century (think of artists such as Medardo Rosso, Arturo Martini or Auguste Rodin in his sketches). There is a strong focus on psychological expressiveness rather than mere formal similarity. Rather than the glossy portrait of a specific individual, this head seems to embody a human condition: toil, wisdom, the weight of experience, or inner contemplation. The surface of the terracotta is extremely rough, vibrant and material.
