His aim was to create glare-free light that was directed precisely where it was needed, producing a pleasant lighting atmosphere with soft shadows.

the four-shade system was developed in 1931 as an alternative to the chandeliers that were common at the time. The additional shade emits more light horizontally, thus illuminating walls and shelves better than with the classic three-shade lamps.

after the lamp was discontinued from louis poulsen's standard product line in the 1940s, the concept was reinterpreted in 1979 by the danish architects sophus frandsen and ebbe christensen for the charlottenborg exhibition hall in copenhagen. A small blue shade was added to reduce glare, along with matte white shades for particularly even and pleasant light.

the smaller version ph 5-4½ was developed in 1984 for the aarhus concert hall. This piece has an attribution mark,
