Centered on prominent peony and chrysanthemum motifs and supported by three stout, outward-tapered legs, the vessel is highly detailed, and its hand-chased artistry is characteristic of premium vintage Chinese export brassware, likely from Hong Kong. Dating from the mid-to-late 20th century, the motifs on this piece were created with a hammer and a blunt, wedge-like punch to push and compress the brass surface downward without removing any metal. It resulted in large, fluidly scrolling peonies and chrysanthemums bounded within prominent cloud-collar or ‘ruyi’ panels. These are specific asymmetrical botanical compositions and the classic hallmarks of traditional Chinese decorative art. As a jardiner, it's lightweight at 2 lbs, a decorative cachepot meant to hold a pre-potted plant, has no drainage holes to protect fine wooden furniture, mantels, and tables from water damage, and a perfect element with an interior-layer warmth of metallic tones and historical character to fit Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, or Global Eclectic spaces. Its design creates harmony for any interior or exterior landscape setting. The condition of the cachepot maintained a half-century-old patina finish and a structurally sound body, free of minor dents or cracks. The finish showcases a rich, authentic, unpolished brass and beautiful verdigris (green oxidation) naturally nestled deep within the many intricate hand-engraved floral recesses. The interior has darkened naturally over decades of age and light use, confirming its vintage heritage and providing a highly sought-after, time-worn character that elevates its value above polished, modern reproductions. less
