A beautifully carved antique walnut settee in the Empire / Biedermeier tradition, featuring the graceful proportions and elegant restraint that define the finest 19th century Continental seating. The carved crest rail is centered by a laurel-wrapped medallion flanked by carved foliate scrolls, and the three shaped splat back panels showcase figured walnut with exceptional grain movement. Scrolled arms extend to sabre-shaped legs — a hallmark of the period.
The proportions make this a versatile piece: small enough to work as a bench at the foot of a bed, in an entryway, a dressing room, or a reading nook, but with the presence of a true statement piece.
Currently upholstered in a red and cream striped silk that suits the traditional aesthetic beautifully — but this piece would also transform stunningly in a modern reupholstery: a natural bouclé, a rich velvet, a striped ticking, or a graphic modern print would let the carved frame shine.
