Among the most distinctive expressions of italian lighting design from the period, the cubosfera is conceived as a precise encounter between two elementary geometries: a luminous sphere enclosed within a transparent cube. Each lamp is formed from two substantial sections of molded glass, joined horizontally to create a compact architectural volume. Their softly rounded edges, natural irregularities and extraordinary optical depth cause the surrounding space to fragment and multiply through the thickness of the glass. At the centre, the spherical diffuser appears almost suspended, transforming the cube into a small luminous chamber. This pair belongs to the particularly rare version featuring an internally satin-finished sphere. According to its original provenance, this variation was produced upon request for selected clients who wished to conceal the visible light bulbs. The fine satin surface softens the illumination and gives the internal globe an almost velvety appearance, producing a more intimate and diffused glow than the standard transparent version. The photographs and video beautifully reveal the contrast between the clear, heavy glass exterior and the softly illuminated inner sphere. When switched off, the lamps read as rigorous sculptural objects; when illuminated, the sphere expands visually through the refracting walls of the cube, creating reflections, doubled forms and pools of warm light across the surrounding surface. Both lamps remain completely original, including their glass bodies, internal diffusers, electrical fittings, black radial upper elements, small feet and wiring. Originally, the pair stood on two bedside tables. One was positioned closer to a window and was exposed to considerably more natural light over the decades. As a result, its glass gradually developed a warmer, subtly amber-toned appearance, while the other retained a clearer and cooler transparency. This difference is not merely a trace of age, but the most poetic aspect of the pair. Conceived as identical objects, they have slowly acquired two individual personalities through the environments in which they lived. They remain unmistakably a couple, yet no longer exact replicas: two pieces equal in design, proportion and origin, but distinguished by time. They may naturally be imagined as his and hers, his and his, or hers and hers. The pairing is not defined by gender, but by companionship: two matching forms with separate identities, belonging together precisely because each has become unique. The contrast is especially compelling when illuminated. One lamp emits a clearer, more crystalline light, while the other takes on a warmer and more intimate golden tone. Placed side by side, they create a subtle dialogue between coolness and warmth, symmetry and individuality. The glass elements are preserved in excellent original condition, with no cracks, breaks or significant chips. This is particularly rare for the cubosfera, whose considerable weight and complex two-part construction mean that surviving examples are frequently found with damaged, replaced or mismatched glass. A highly collectible and visually compelling pair: identical by design, transformed by life, and impossible to reproduce in precisely the same way. Condition note: the lamps are preserved in outstanding original condition, with only subtle age-related variations consistent with their history. As with all vintage lighting, we recommend professional inspection and rewiring if required for safe operation and compliance with contemporary local electrical standards.
