The unidentified artist has concentrated particular attention on the sitter’s softly illuminated face, which emerges delicately from the deep brown background. The restrained palette, subtle modelling of the complexion and freer, more expressive handling of the headdress and drapery give the painting an intimate and atmospheric quality.

The work is attributed to the French School and is most plausibly dated to the second half of the 19th century, possibly circa 1870–1900. The costume appears to be inspired by earlier, possibly 18th-century, dress and should therefore not necessarily be used to date the painting itself.

The reverse bears the stencilled number “10”. The canvas measures exactly 55 × 46 cm, corresponding to the traditional French 10F figure format.

Unsigned. The canvas has recently undergone restoration and is presented in a moulded ebonized wooden frame.

A particularly decorative and expressive portrait, suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. See less
