John Steele Gordon, a distinguished financial historian and club member, wrote several commemorative histories about the Union Club. While he contributed to An Illustrated History of the Union Club of the City of New York, 1836–2012, his standalone authoritative accounts of the Union Club span broadly across its history, including the mid-20th-century eras.

Founded in 1836, the Union Club is the oldest private gentleman’s club in New York City. Known as "the mother of clubs", its conservative traditions—such as refusing to expel Confederate members during the Civil War—prompted splinter factions to break away and form competing institutions like the Union League, Knickerbocker, and Metropolitan clubs. The Union Club's current facility, opened in 1933, is a Delano & Aldrich-designed landmark located at 101 East 69th Street at the corner of Park Avenue. See less
