Description:
A substantial 1920s Japanese Awaji art pottery low bowl featuring a striking periwinkle blue high-gloss glaze with a subtle iridescent, mother-of-pearl sheen visible at select angles. Crafted during the Taisho/early Showa era on Awaji Island, this piece showcases a low-profile tripod form supported by three sculpted bun feet and finished with an inverted rolled rim.
Authenticity is verified by an impressed "JAPAN" mark on the base (post-1921 import mark) alongside raw ceramic stilt-firing marks on the foot pads, dating production prior to the permanent closure of the Awaji kilns in 1939. The signature lead-silicate glaze exhibits classic early 20th-century micro-crazing, natural surface patination, and rich tonal pooling along the lower circumference.
Condition Details:
Excellent antique/vintage condition overall. Free of chips, cracks, hairline fissures, or restorations. Displays light surface friction wear appropriate for its age, along with minor glaze pooling and pinhole pops inherent to early 20th-century hand-fired lead glazes.
