Bring a piece of Great Lakes artistic history into your home with this stunning vintage mid-century sculpture by renowned Michigan artist Norman Brumm. Famous for capturing the delicate beauty of North American flora and fauna, this free-standing piece showcases a beautifully stylized songbird in mid-flight or landing posture.
The bird is meticulously hand-formed from copper and layered with a rich, glossy vitreous glass enamel. The fiery reddish-brown and white coloration on the wings and crown features a gorgeous, subtle crackle finish from the kiln-firing process.
True to Brumm’s signature style, the delicate copper bird is mounted via sturdy wire legs onto a heavy, rugged piece of organic burl wood. The striking contrast between the glossy, colorful enamel and the deep, textured earthy wood epitomizes mid-century studio craftsmanship.
The underside of the burl wood base features the authentic stamped "BRUMM" signature alongside the hand-carved initials "SH", denoting the specific studio artisan who finished the piece. The bottom also features the original poured metallic lead weight insert, a technique Brumm used to ensure his top-heavy sculptures remained perfectly stable on display.
