This artwork is an authentic modernist oil painting by American artist Victor Thall (1902-
1983) which serves as a rare, dual-layered palimpsest capturing both his academic training and his rebellious, avant-garde studio practices in 1939 New York.
The reverse side of the canvas bears an official, permanent stamp from The Metropolitan Museum of Art dated January 7, 1939, proving that Thall initially used this canvas under official supervision to paint a mandatory copyist study of a museum masterpiece, specifically Paul Cezanne's Still Life with Jar, Cup, and Apples. While he maintained the basic structural grid of the original tabletop layout to paint a dense, expressive floral vase in the foreground, he aggressively layered a hidden, highly expressionistic nude female figure into the upper right background foliage. reclaiming the authorized museum canvas to create an original, psychologically complex composition, Thall transformed a standard replica into a unique, multi-layered document of New York School history that challenges standard provenance and holds significant appeal for avant-garde collectors.
