who are well remembered in literary history, and those who write one highly acclaimed book and then for various reasons slip from such prominence. Josephine Johnson falls into the latter group, and her position today away from the limelight is somewhat puzzling, given the raves that her first novel, Now in November, received from critics. Told in prose that approaches poetry, Now in November recounts the life of a Middle Western family, the Haldmarnes. "It is a novel with the memorable quality of Ethan Frome and My Antonia, a book not to be easily forgotten," said the Boston Transcript. The New York Times applauded her ability to deal with delicate human emotions and her "exquisite descriptions." Artist Joseph Isom has turned Josephine Johnson's "exquisite descriptions" into a series of superb pencil-and-wahs illustrations. A special-order Publisher's Eggshell paper was manufactured in Maine at the Warren Mills to show Isom's work to the best advantage and to carry the Vladimir typefact of the text. The whole is most suitable for a book the Chicago Daily Tribune called "a first novel which any writer might envy .akin to the luminous work of Willa Cather."
