The removable domed cover is surmounted by a finely modeled recumbent borzoi (Russian wolfhound), lending the piece a distinctive sculptural quality. The oval body is decorated with lion masks and raised fluting, while the four legs take the form of stylized lionesses or sphinxes terminating in paw feet.

The interior is fitted as a double inkwell, retaining two circular glass or metal ink pot holders, with a central rectangular compartment designed for pen nibs, sealing wax, or other writing accessories.
