This delicate oil on canvas, mounted on panel, is an Impressionist work depicting a fisherman on the bank of a river, on the outskirts of a village surrounded by vegetation that extends even onto the water's surface. The artist, using quick and loose brushstrokes, captures the changing light of the landscape, and the angled perspective adds dynamism to the composition.

Impressionism, born in France in the last third of the 19th century, was an artistic movement essentially defined by Impressionist painting. It was characterized primarily by its ultimate aspiration to capture the light of a specific moment in its works, employing a loose, impasto, and very rapid brushstroke.

Thanks to technical and scientific advances that allowed for the creation of new pigments, the use of pure colors also became widespread. These achieved a purity and saturation of color previously unimaginable. Complementary colors also became fundamental, along with the type of brushstroke and the complete absence of drawing. For this same reason, shadows went from including black in their composition to being called "colored shadows," mixing complementary colors to darken them without the need for black. This also helped to create a greater sense of depth. This work perfectly exemplifies all the characteristics of the style.

Hidden beneath the frame is the signature “Luce 07,” attributed to Maximilien Luce (1858–1941), a French artist, printmaker, and painter. He studied at the School of Decorative Arts and later worked as a wood engraver. In 1872, he studied with Adolf von Hildebrand and attended Maillart's evening classes. His style was heavily influenced by the Impressionists, although he achieved his greatest recognition using the Pointillist method or technique, developed by Georges Seurat.

He exhibited for the first time in 1887 (seven works) at the Third Salon des Indépendants. from 1889, he participated regularly in art exhibitions in Brussels, first at the Salon des XX and, from 1895, at La Libre Esthétique. In 1892, he visited Signac in Saint-Tropez, and in 1893, he moved to Brittany. where ports and riverbanks became frequent subjects of his canvases. In 1935, he accepted the presidency of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, succeeding Signac.

Although landscapes predominate in his work, during the early 1900s he also painted portraits and flowers. It was at the beginning of this decade that he abandoned Neo-Impressionist techniques in favor of a much freer brushstroke. Scenes set in blast furnaces also occupy a significant place in his oeuvre, where he depicted the work of rolling mill operators, welders, and other trades.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum holds several of his works, including a landscape entitled “Surroundings of Rolleboise, Seen Through the Trees.”
