Basket measures approximately 6.5" in diameter between the two wooden screws securing handle, 5.5" in diameter across basket, 8" tall with handles up, 3.75" tall with handles down. Pin cushion measures approximately 2.75" in diameter, 2.5" tall.
The basket is tightly woven over a mold, fitted with a solid wooden base, and crafted using techniques passed down from the original lightship sailors of the 1800s. In 1840, the U.S. Government commissioned a ship outfitted with a light to protect sailors navigating around Nantucket. During their long eight-month shifts, the crew learned basket-making from local Native Americans, forming the foundation of the iconic Nantucket Lightship Basket. Today these baskets are highly collectible.
