A wonderful antique lacquered papier-mâché box, Continental (likely German, Brunswick tradition), 18th century. The lid is finely hand-painted with a lively figural scene — a crowded gathering of Regency-era ladies and gentlemen in period dress, centered on a woman being presented or escorted before an assembled company, set within an interior with drapery and architectural detail.
Accompanied by an old handwritten collector's note on the history of papier-mâché manufacture, pasted to the interior of the lid.
