This is a beautiful, finely crafted shell cameo brooch hand-carved from Cassis Cornuta, otherwise better known as Horned Helmet shell. This is one of the best mediums for cameo carving. I am often amazed at how skilled carvers create beautiful art pieces by using the various color strata that this particular shell offers. It takes a highly skilled artisan to be able to achieve that! This beautiful depiction of Bacchus is a fine example of how layers of differing hues may be used to give added definition, depth, and contrast to cameo carvings. There are about a lot of separate layers on this beautifully carved cameo!
