Painted from close range, this oil on canvas catches a woman mid-recline, her body taking up nearly the whole frame: hip rising, shoulder dropping into shadow, one arm folded beneath her. Da Fonseca Ilić works in warm, unhurried strokes of blush, cream, and ochre, letting light pool along the curve of her back the way it would pool on sand. Behind her, the scene opens wide, with turquoise water, a low green shoreline, and a sky heaped with pink tinged cloud. It's a quiet, sun drunk moment, the kind where a body and a beach start to feel like the same warm surface.
Small enough to live somewhere personal, this piece asks for a bedroom, a reading nook, or a wall you pass on your way somewhere else, a painting that rewards the second look more than the first. Unframed and shipped rolled in a protective tube, it slots easily into an existing frame or a gallery wall built around it.
Javiera da Fonseca Ilić (b. 1982, Santiago de Chile) is a visual artist currently based in Mexico. She paints landscapes that sit between memory and imagination, warm, saturated canvases filled with the energy of places half-remembered and half-dreamed. She begins with photography from her travels, bringing images into the studio and transforming them into something atmospheric and emotional. What emerges are places you feel you have never been to but somehow know. Originally from Santiago de Chile, she studied Visual Arts at Universidad de Chile, graduating in 2005, and deepened her practice through mentorships with celebrated Chilean artist Eugenio Dittborn. She has presented solo exhibitions in Mexico City, Vancouver, and Zihuatanejo, with work shown at art fairs across Miami, Toronto, San Francisco, New York, and Montreal, and is held in private collections internationally. She is now based in Tulum, Mexico, where she maintains a studio.
