An exceptional early 20th-century J.S. Ford, Johnson & Co. adjustable swivel office chair, expertly manufactured in Michigan City, Indiana, during the golden age of American office furniture.
Constructed from beautifully figured quarter-sawn white oak, this substantial executive chair showcases the quality craftsmanship and enduring design for which Ford & Johnson became renowned. Broad sculpted arms, a gently curved slatted back, a contoured saddle seat, and a robust five-leg pedestal create a chair that is both functional and visually striking.
A standout feature is the original cast-iron swivel and height-adjustment mechanism, boldly cast “The Ford & Johnson Co., Chicago.” The mechanism remains in excellent working condition, allowing the chair to swivel smoothly while adjusting easily to the desired height.
The chair retains its gorgeous original quarter-sawn white oak finish and original cast-iron swivel mechanism, while the rolling casters have been upgraded to vintage Bassick wheels for smoother rolling and practical everyday use.
With its warm honey-colored patina, dramatic ray-fleck grain, and authentic early American craftsmanship, this chair is equally at home in an executive office, library, study, or as a statement piece in an Arts & Crafts, Mission, Industrial, or Traditional interior.
A beautifully preserved example of one of America’s premier office furniture manufacturers.
