A butter-yellow, high-gloss ceramic lamp of the type collectors call Casa Pupo — after the Pimlico Road shop opened in … Read more A butter-yellow, high-gloss ceramic lamp of the type collectors call Casa Pupo — after the Pimlico Road shop opened in 1960 by Geoffrey Dobson and José Casasús, which imported saturated single-colour Spanish ceramics into London.

The bases came largely from Manises, the pottery town outside Valencia that has worked clay since the fourteenth century, when it supplied lustreware to popes and the Aragonese crown; this one is attributed to Cerámicas Bondia, among the most respected of those workshops and a Casa Pupo supplier.

The whole body is modelled as a stylised artichoke — overlapping bracts, each with a nested sheath and raised spine, caught just before opening — and that one idea is carried the full height, narrowing into the fluted neck and spreading into a collar of leaves at the foot. The glaze pools deep in the relief and thins to cream on the raised edges. It stands on its original giltwood base, and is paired with a new wide, shallow coral silk shade and a twisted gold fabric wrapped cord.
