Its shade is built … Read more A lovely, typically retro-futurist spherical pendant light from an unnamed manufacturer in Vienna, 1950s, newly rewired. Its shade is built from cream-coloured vinyl cord, wound in vertical courses over a wire armature and secured at the equator by a slender dark band.

The technique, common to Central European lighting production of the 1950s, produces an even, diffused light through the woven cord surface, and the resulting globe sits comfortably alongside the sculptural, single-volume lighting language of the period, the kind of restrained geometric form that runs through Scandinavian and Italian globe and cocoon shades of the same decades, think Jacobson's Moon light or Castiglioni's organically shaped "skin" pendants.
