This sculpture is a finely chiseled bronze bust depicting a young woman, known as "La Zingara" (or "Scugnizza"), by the renowned Neapolitan sculptor Vincenzo Gemito, whose signature is engraved on the front hem of her dress. The young woman's face, framed by a headscarf tied at the nape of her neck and locks of wavy hair, is captured in an extraordinarily spontaneous and lively expression, characterized by a realistic smile showing teeth and a dynamic, intense gaze. The work rests on a baluster-shaped base turned from dark material.
This subject was created in the late 19th century, approximately in the 1880s in Naples. Stylistically, the sculpture fits squarely into Italian Verismo, a movement that Gemito profoundly influenced by portraying the faces of ordinary people and street children with extreme naturalness and psychological sensitivity. The extraordinary rendering of light on the bronze surfaces and the freshness of the modeling give the figure a strong sense of immediacy and everyday truth.
