Lavender Garden No. 1 is my contemporary interpretation of French lavender, a plant known for its long flowering season, distinctive flower heads, and unmistakable fragrance. I've always been drawn to the blooms' sculptural quality. Even from a distance, you recognize the plant immediately.
The planter is intentionally soft and undefined. It references a classical garden urn, but only as a suggestion. I wanted your eye to complete the form rather than define every edge.
Rather than creating a botanical illustration, I focused on the simple shapes that make French lavender so recognizable—the upright flower spikes crowned with their delicate, wing-like bracts. Reducing the plant to its essential forms gives the painting a clean, contemporary feel while preserving the character that makes lavender so familiar.
This painting is about the memory of a summer garden. It feels at home in a garden room, sunroom, or summer house, bringing a quiet reminder of warm afternoons and the scent of lavender.
