This is an antique French fire screen in the Louis XV style, standing on four gently curved cabriole legs and centered with a woven floral tapestry panel in the Aubusson manner. The sage-green painted frame is topped with a carved rocaille shell cresting, and the tapestry, a bouquet of roses and garden flowers rising from a footed urn, is held in place with brass dome nailhead trim and finished with woven rosette medallions at the corners. This piece is in good antique condition overall, with one small area of noted wear described below.
Construction and design notes:
- Four cabriole legs with scrolled toes support a shaped, painted wood frame
- Carved rocaille shell cartouche centers the top rail
- Front panel woven in the Aubusson manner with a floral urn bouquet framed by scrolling acanthus and ribbon swags
- Brass dome nailhead trim borders the tapestry panel, finished with woven pinwheel rosettes at the corners
- Reverse panel is a plain, undecorated fabric backing, standard for a screen meant to be viewed from one side only
Flat measurements: panel 30 in x 30 in (76.2 x 76.2 cm). Overall height 37 in (94 cm). Depth at the leg spread: 15 in (38.1 cm).
This screen is in good antique condition. There is a small chip to the carved shell cresting at the top center, where a bit of wood is exposed beneath the green paint. The paint throughout shows light, even wear consistent with age and use, and the reverse panel has scattered foxing typical of an old fabric backing that has spent decades facing a fireplace. The tapestry panel itself shows soft, expected fading with no holes, tears, or repairs noted.
This piece suits a collector furnishing a period fireplace, a designer looking for an accent piece with real color and age, or anyone staging a room with genuine French antiques rather than reproductions.
Origin: France. Era: 19th century, Louis XV Revival style (stylistic estimate). Materials: painted wood, Aubusson-style woven textile, Sold in the condition shown and described above.
