A wonderful example of 18th-century French cabinetry, this two-door buffet embodies the warmth and honest construction the Louis XV country style is prized for. Raised on gently curving cabriole legs that terminate in scrolled feet, the case is fitted with two drawers above a pair of arched, shaped panel doors, all crowned by a generous plank top with a molded edge. The apron is carved with a shallow serpentine scallop centered on a carved heart motif, a charming and distinctly regional flourish.
The piece retains its original wrought iron hardware throughout, including hand-forged escutcheons, drop-ring pulls, and a decorative strap hinge at the door edge, all with the patina of true age. The two frieze drawers are dovetailed and open to reveal beautifully aged secondary wood, along with chalk marks that speak to its working history in a French farmhouse or provincial home.
Inside, the cabinet is fitted with a single fixed shelf, dividing the interior into two generous storage compartments, ideal for linens, serving pieces, or bar storage. The case shows the expected signs of age and honest use, including old surface losses, tool marks, and some historic insect activity to the secondary wood, none of which affects the structural integrity of the piece. Cabinet door construction includes a working lock (not original) with key, and interior latch on non-locking door. The timber has a warm, sun-faded golden tone on the front and top. The doors and drawers all operate as intended.
This is a versatile, sturdy case piece equally at home as an entry console, sideboard, or media cabinet, bringing genuine 18th century French character and a well-earned patina to any room.
