About the Golden Gate Bridge

Completed in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most recognised landmarks in the world and an enduring symbol of San Francisco and California.

Designed by Joseph Strauss, with significant engineering contributions from Leon Moisseiff and Charles Alton Ellis, together with Art Deco styling by Irving Morrow, the suspension bridge spans approximately 1.7 miles (2.7 km) across the Golden Gate Strait connecting San Francisco with Marin County.

Its distinctive International Orange colour, originally selected as a protective primer, became a permanent feature because of its visibility in coastal fog and its striking harmony with the surrounding landscape. Today the bridge remains one of the world's most photographed architectural icons and a favourite subject for artists.

Jean Bowler worked from Orinda, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area, producing finely executed miniature oil paintings inspired by Californian landscapes, coastal scenery and regional landmarks.
