I am fortunate to have one of the famous blankets from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The The Routt Co Woolen Mills closed in 2011.~ These creamy-yellow blankets with the blue stripes are the 'signature' items from the mill. Made in USA, local materials. I recall that there was some connection to the Faribault Woolen Mills in Minnesota. A large blanket 82"X94", shown on a Queen bed.
The company was formed in 1997 as a test project sponsored by the Routt County Agricultural Extension office to create a local market for Northwest Colorado wool. [1, 2]
Production: The company sourced raw wool from approximately 12 local producers. This wool was typically shipped to the Faribault Woolen Mills in Minnesota to be processed into final products. They were known for producing heirloom-quality blankets, often in distinctive annual color patterns. Routt County Woolens decided to close in 2011. The decision was largely influenced by the 2009 closure of the Faribault mill, which led to prohibitive manufacturing costs for the small Colorado business.
