An exceptional antique English oil portrait traditionally identified as Reverend John Brownlow (1703-1788), a long-serving minister of Park Lane Chapel in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire.
An inscription handwritten along the lower inner edge of the frame identifies the sitter as “Rev. John Brownlow 1703-1788.” Historical records from Park Lane Chapel confirm that Reverend Brownlow became minister in 1727, served the congregation for fifty-nine years, resigned in 1786 due to age, and passed away in 1788 at the age of eighty-five. While the attribution has not been independently authenticated, the documented historical record closely aligns with the inscription and the period styling of the portrait.
The sitter is depicted wearing a powdered wig and white neckcloth, rendered in the understated manner characteristic of Georgian portraiture. Rich, dark tones and a warm, timeworn patina lend the painting the quiet presence that only centuries of age can impart.
Presented in an antique gilt wood frame, this piece offers both historical intrigue and timeless decorative appeal. Whether displayed as part of a collected wall of portraits or as a standalone statement piece, it is a wonderful example of the English country house aesthetic that designers and collectors continue to seek.
