An original Georgian-era hand-colored aquatint engraving titled Duck Shooting after renowned English sporting artist Samuel Howitt (1756-1822), published in London on April 1, 1807.
This finely detailed sporting scene depicts two huntsmen and their dogs pursuing waterfowl within an atmospheric marsh landscape. The print is beautifully hand-colored in soft greens, ochres, and muted blue-grey tones that lend themselves perfectly to English country and traditional interiors.
The lower margin bears the title Duck Shooting alongside its French translation La Chasse aux Canards, as well as the original publication inscription:
“Published & Sold April 1, 1807 by Edward Orme, Printseller to the King, Engraver & Publisher, Bond Street, the corner of Brook Street, London.”
Edward Orme was one of London’s foremost print publishers of the Georgian period and held the distinguished title of Printseller to King George III. A numbered medallion appears at the lower center of the engraving, indicating its place within the publisher’s sporting print series.
Presented in a traditional dark wood frame with warm ochre matting and protected beneath glass, this piece offers over two centuries of English sporting history and would make a wonderful addition to a library, study, mudroom, or curated gallery wall.
