A beautifully framed mid-century facsimile of Samuel Howitt’s celebrated sporting print “Duck Shooting,” or “La Chasse aux Canards,” originally published by Edward Orme in London in 1807.
This example is believed to be from the circa 1955 Charles W. Traylen facsimile edition of Orme’s Collection of British Field Sports, which reproduced the original sporting plates using color offset lithography.
The identification is supported by the dimensions of the printed image, approximately 33 x 45 cm, which closely correspond to documented examples from the 1955 edition measuring approximately 33 x 44.7 cm. The full sheet measures approximately 41.5 x 55 cm.
The image retains the original composition and period inscriptions, including the English and French titles, “Duck Shooting” and “La Chasse aux Canards,” the No. 18 cartouche, Samuel Howitt attribution, and the original Edward Orme 1807 publication line.
Presented under glass in a handsome wood frame, the piece has wonderful decorative presence and embodies the traditional English sporting aesthetic associated with country houses, libraries and collected interiors.
Please note that this work was previously attributed as an original early 19th-century aquatint. Following further examination and research, we believe it to be the circa 1955 Charles W. Traylen color offset facsimile after the original 1807 aquatint, and the listing has been updated accordingly.
