It captures the gift of internalised … Read more This painting was inspired by The Two Fridas, a 1939 painting by Frida Kahlo. It captures the gift of internalised conversations, the ability to step within and know oneself. It is a self-portrait of sorts; I painted myself having a conversation with myself (this painting is part of a series I started during the 2020 lockdown, called Conversations With Self).

In the painting, I reference themes of culture and origin through the attire of the sitter(s). Àdìrẹ (which literally means tie and dye) is a traditional fabric of the Yorùbá people of southwestern Nigeria. It originated from the people of Abẹ́òkúta - my hometown. Other stylistic elements in the painting enhance the themes of connection and origin, such as a reference to the iconic Ikoyi link bridge in Lagos, the dramatically floating wine glasses which highlight intrapersonal friendship, and the abstract patterns at the base of the painting which suggest the relationship of the sitter with his world.
