This is an exquisite 19th-century chromolithograph plate (Pl. 142) reproducing a 9th-century Saxon illuminated manuscript. The artwork originates from the historic "Commentaries of St. Augustine on the Pentateuch," currently housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris (Gervais Latin, No. 738).
The plate showcases the intricate Insular art style, featuring elaborate interlace patterns, zoomorphic figures, and stylized Celtic knotwork characteristic of the early medieval period. The vibrant colors and metallic accents reflect the high-quality lithographic techniques used in the mid-to-late 1800s to document significant historical texts.
The French inscription at the top reads: "Fin du IXe SIÈCLE Saxon / 2e recto des Commentaires de St. Augustin sur le Pentateuque." This piece is an exceptional find for collectors of medieval history, paleography, or fine 19th-century prints. The paper shows a natural aged patina consistent with its era, adding to its authentic vintage character.
