A carved oak two-door armoire, attributed to Charles Dudouyt, France, 1940s.
The facade is dominated by six deeply carved target roundels, each door hosting a stacked trio of concentric circles that recede toward a raised central boss, giving the piece a rhythmic quality and considerable visual weight from across a room. Framing this bold relief is a tapered diamond parquetry border, alternating light and dark oak in a checkerboard sequence that runs the full perimeter of both doors and continues down the stiles and canted top edge.
The cornice and base are further defined by carved circular guilloche banding above and a scalloped, leaf-form apron below, resting on short block feet. Wrought brass strap hinges and swan-neck escutcheons, each fitted with its original ring-pull key, underscore the workshop cabinetmaker's attention to hardware as ornament rather than afterthought. Inside, a single fixed shelf divides the cavity, retaining its period floral-print shelf paper as an honest record of use.
This is furniture built on the honesty of materials, where the geometry is structural rather than applied. The bold, sculptural relief and folk-inflected symbolism place it comfortably within Brutalist Folk and Organic Modern interiors, where its density and hand-carved texture read as counterpoint to pared-back, neutral schemes. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
