In the 1930s, some French furniture gradually moved away from purely decorative elements, adopting a more restrained and architectural style. This cabinet is a remarkable example of this. with its deliberate asymmetry, the purity of its lines, and the absence of superfluous ornamentation, it aligns with the French modernist movement and evokes certain designs for the Cité Universitaire by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, some Dutch pieces by Willem Penaat, and the work of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM).
The composition is particularly well-balanced: a large storage space enclosed by two doors, a raised block of three drawers, and an open niche create an almost architectural interplay of volumes, like a small modernist façade. The tubular handles in patinated brass punctuate the piece with understated elegance.
The flamed veneer, with its deep amber tones, enlivens the front with a mirrored grain pattern characteristic of late Art Deco pieces.
The interior retains a functional construction typical of French modernist workshops of the 1930s and 40s.
The contrast between the clean lines and the vibrant texture of the veneer lends the piece a subtle sculptural presence.
Some old traces of wood-boring insects are visible on certain lower sections of the cabinet. It has been treated both curatively and preventively. A photographic record of the treatment is available upon request.
The cabinet's key is missing.
