Some decorative sculptures from the 1930s sought to faithfully reproduce nature. This one takes a different approach.

The fish is no longer a subject of observation but a form. Its body becomes a compact volume, the fins are simplified into broad surfaces, while the eye and gills are reduced to a few lines that suffice to give it its full presence.

This quest for synthesis is characteristic of French Art Deco, where stylization gradually takes precedence over ornamentation. The immediately recognizable silhouette evokes the marine motifs that adorned the architecture of ocean liners, seaside resorts, and modern interiors at the time.

The work is signed "E. Guy," an attribution that likely refers to the sculptor Édouard Guy, Count du Passage, who created several decorative animal sculptures during the interwar period.
