The piece began with a simple desire to paint a man playing a saxophone. As the image
developed, personal references found their way into the work. The figure wears the uniform of my former boarding school, while the green and white palette recalls Nigeria’s national colours. Built through layers of oil paint, texture, and repeated patterns, the work brings together memory, observation, and imagination. Rather than illustrating a specific story, the painting took shape through the act of making, allowing familiar elements to surface naturally on the canvas.
