An exceptional monumental Victorian Renaissance Revival pier mirror dating to the late nineteenth century, this impressive architectural piece embodies the grand decorative style that defined America’s Gilded Age. Designed to make a dramatic statement in an entry hall, ballroom, or formal parlor, the mirror features a richly ornamented giltwood frame with bold proportions and remarkable visual presence. Its oversized mirror plate and elaborate crest create an unmistakable focal point while reflecting light beautifully throughout a room.
The frame is lavishly decorated with fluted and turned pilasters, incised geometric ornament, classical moldings, and a commanding central crest highlighted by scrolling acanthus, floral garlands, and a shell motif. The substantial craftsmanship and architectural scale are hallmarks of high-quality Victorian decorative arts, with a composition that bridges Renaissance Revival and Classical Revival influences. The warm, time-softened gilded surface has developed an attractive patina that gives the mirror tremendous depth and character, making it equally at home in a period interior or as a dramatic statement piece in a contemporary setting.
The mirror is in nice antique condition consistent with its age and over 140 years of use. It retains an old mirror plate with expected age-related silver loss and spotting that enhance its authentic antique character. The giltwood frame displays scattered losses to the gesso and gilt finish, and the lower left corner is missing several pieces of applied molding, as shown in the photographs. Despite these honest signs of age, the mirror remains structurally sound and presents exceptionally well, retaining the commanding presence that makes monumental Victorian pier mirrors so highly sought after. 99h x 72w x 7d
