Michael Baxte was an American painter whose work was included in the painting competition at the 1936 Summer Olympics. During the 1930s, he and his wife, Violet, lived mainly in Paris, where he became associated with the School of Paris. He exhibited in major government-sponsored exhibitions, including the Salon d'Automne, and helped organize an exhibition of American painters. At the start of World War II, the couple moved to Mexico, where they continued to live and work. Baxte died there in 1972.
This is an original oil painting by Baxte in a more modern figurative impressionist style with significant impasto texture. It was painting on canvas board and is very nicely framed in what appears to be its original silver gilt frame with hints of French Baroque/Rococo design elements. The painting shows a beautiful countryside scene with huge billowing white clouds rising from the distant horizon and juxtaposed against a light blue sky above and vibrant greens, blues and yellows of the near and distant landscape. The back of the board has multiple stickers which appear to be old inventory or reference numbers. This beautiful piece is ready to hang and enjoy.
Framed, the painting measures 26.5" in height, 30.5" wide, and 2" deep. Sight measures 20.5" in height and 25.25" wide. The painting is signed in the lower right corner "M. Baxte" and an illegible date ("56"?).
Condition: The painting is in wonderful vintage condition and although there are no visible flaws and no visible soiling/staining marks, it may have slight surface imperfections consistent with age and materials. The frame is solid and looks quite nice, though it may have minor surface imperfections consistent with age.
