A striking and highly collectible Royal Doulton "The Drake Jug" No. 190, an exceptional example of English historical pottery celebrating the life and legend of Sir Francis Drake. This large relief-molded character jug is among Royal Doulton's most distinctive commemorative pieces, combining fine sculptural detail with rich maritime and Elizabethan imagery.
The body of the jug is decorated in high relief with portraits of Sir Francis Drake, sailing ships, heraldic motifs, royal figures, and scenes inspired by England's victory over the Spanish Armada. The impressive rope-form handle incorporates nautical elements including an anchor and lantern, reinforcing the jug's maritime theme. Around the rim appears an excerpt from Charles Kingsley's celebrated novel Westward Ho!, from which the jug takes its subtitle.
The underside is fully marked and titled "The Drake Jug – Westward Ho", identifying Drake as "Great Sailor, Great Englishman, Royal Elizabeth's Great Admiral" and noting its production as Jug No. 190.
